The Other Side Of The Coin - Why Some Parents Put Up Their Children For Infant Adoption

Much has been said about the reasons why couples decide to partake of infant adoption. The couple may be incapable of conceiving a child of their own, for example, or they simply want a child without having to endure pregnancy. They may even be planning to adopt each other's children from previous relationships, or a relative who has been orphaned because of some tragic event.

But what of the other party in infant adoption? What about the biological parents? What are their reasons for putting up their kids for adoption?

Here are some of them:

* Biological parents are financially incapable of rearing the child, either because of the economic conditions they are engaged with, or because they have too many children caused by poor family planning. The costs attached to caring for a child can be quite intimidating for people who have always lived on a tight budget.

* Child was born under unwanted conditions. The biological mother may have had an unplanned pregnancy, and she feels that she cannot take care of the child because of family pressure, or because she's too young for such an undertaking, or because she feels she's not ready for such a responsibility.

* Parent experienced hopelessness when thinking of the child's future. The mother may be raising the child by herself in the event that the father abandoned them. This is quite a heavy predicament to be in. Though the child can bring so much joy to her world, if left with no resources or support, the mother will feel confused. She'd want nothing but the best for her child, but she's afraid that she cannot provide for the same. Hence, she resorts to infant adoption.

* The biological parents may have died. This, however, accounts for only 4% of infant adoption cases. The reason is because the closest of kin usually assume parental authority over the baby.

* There are some countries that consider motherhood without marriage quite scandalous. Such mothers would rather surrender their children rather than face their society's wrath. Though the propriety of such a cultural viewpoint is questionable, we have to bear in mind that it's the way of life in such territories.

Though these reasons may not sound like the right ones, they are nonetheless factual. Sometimes, people do feel the weight of the world when faced with the prospect of rearing a child into this world. This entails great responsibility, one which not every parent, unfortunately, is ready for.
